Too Young For AA?

Was age 12 too young to get sober?

It was suggested that I go to Alcoholics Anonymous at the ripe ol’ age of 12 years old, due to the decisions I was making before and after my first drink of alcohol. Of course, I did not want to be an alcoholic—I was “too young.” Everyone in the meetings could have passed for my parents or grandparents and I believed I had nothing in common with anyone there. I did not have a job from which I had been fired. I had not lost spouse or home. And I did not have kids because after all, I was a kid! At every meeting I heard every reason why I was not like you, an alcoholic. But I never listened for similarities until someone suggested I do so. When I finally did listen, it was years later.
