In Search of a Spiritual Life

I didn’t recognize it at the time, but I now believe that the gulf between the religion of my youth and the spirituality I enjoy today developed from a small fissure that opened in September 1959. The occasion was my first college party, hosted by a fraternity of current and former altar boys who assisted at Roman Catholic masses, and who were known as the Knights of the Altar. That party also marked my first drunk. Religion met alcohol, and religions was overmatched.
