Somewhere in a lava field in Idaho, a bottle of whiskey was calling his name

In October 1980, I left Fort Bragg in North Carolina on my way to Oregon after having been discharged from the Army. I was leaving my career after 22 years and was not a happy camper. I was eight years shy of the 30 years I had intended to put in. It will come as no great surprise that my early retirement was mainly due to my drinking, which had landed me in disciplinary trouble, making me unpromotable.
