In The Middle of the Boat
At two years sober, I had to travel from Texas to Oregon for an appearance in court regarding a change in child support owed to me. The court in Oregon treated me as if I was a criminal, as if I owed the support—in fact, I was owed thousands of dollars at the time. They interrogated my young son over the phone as if he was a criminal. I was shocked and very upset that I could console my son who was without family at a boarding school. Thankfully, his grandparents picked him up from school and took him home for the weekend.
