I remember first getting into AA—all those sayings, the cliches, the collected wisdom squeezed into aphorisms and short quips. If you were anything like me, they probably irritated you a bit. At the same time, their usefulness was not lost on me. Staggering into my first meeting, hungover and in pain, my brain really couldn’t handle much in the way of sophisticated thinking. So, thank God AA has those short, pithy sayings. As a raw newcomer, one can find the whole program in them.
