Her Relapse Was Waiting
I came out of rehab in 1990 after 28 days—bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Having been introduced to Alcoholics Anonymous when the rehab took us to outside meetings, I felt comfortable and confident, even more so when after two years of sobriety I met my husband-to-be in the rooms. After a year of dating, we had a lovely AA wedding. My life was perfect! My husband had more sobriety than I did, so I felt like evenings when we didn't go to a meeting and spent time together were okay. Then my sponsor drank after ten years sober, and I figured I'd better take my time finding a new one so that I would choose more wisely. In the meantime, my daily prayers gradually became a rushed, "DearGodHelpMeToStaySoberToday" in the car on the way to work.
