A lifelong atheist shares how he embraced the program, learned to help others and found a home in AA

I drank for 40 years, and when I couldn’t stop and my life was in shambles, a friend literally dragged me to my first AA meeting. That was in 2006. All I remember was a room full of drunks praising God for having gotten them sober and reciting the Lord’s Prayer while holding hands at the end of the meeting. Since I had been a lifelong atheist—and still am—I decided that this religious cult was not for me.
