5 Drunks in Kuwait

A sober member of the National Guard and a few of her Army fellows create a little piece of home overseas

In 2021, I deployed to Kuwait with a medical company in the Minnesota Army National Guard. I was excited for this opportunity, knowing that my experience would be vastly different from my first deployment to Iraq in 2007. At that time, I was 20 years old, and my drinking career hadn’t even begun. This time, I would be deploying as a sober soldier in a leadership position. I had grand ideas of implementing the principles of AA in all my affairs, deepening my relationship with my Higher Power and leading soldiers with the AA Fellowship by my side.
